Charlie Whitman’s introduction to Kathy’s family was sudden. The couple met in February 1962, and she brought him home that spring. It was immediately serious. In February 1962, 20-year-old Whitman met Kathleen Frances Leissner, an education major two years his junior. Leissner was Whitman's first serious girlfriend. They courted for five months before announcing their engagement on July 19. Kathy was 23 years old when she died in her home in Austin on August 1, 1966.
