Niet alleen het leven van Goethe vertoont veel gelijkenissen met het leven van Werther, ook zijn er veel overeenkomsten met het leven van Goethes vriend Jerusalem. Jerusalem pleegde zelfmoord vanwege zijn verliefdheid op de vrouw van een andere man.
